For the second time in six months China has offered tax breaks and reduced down payment requirements for homebuyers in an attempt to halt the slide in house prices. The housing market is estimated to be worth 15% of China’s economy and the poor performance in the housing sector has had a significant negative effect on other industries and suppliers.

  The annual call for improved facilities at the National Stadium or even better the provision of a new stadium predictably followed the recent National Sports Tournament. At a time when the major construction companies are begging for business and construction costs have fallen, the new facility would be a welcome boost for the ailing building industry, but there is one major problem. The Government hasn’t the funds or the appetite for the facility.

  Innotech CEO Martin Da Silva has confirmed the impressive new Barbados Water Authority headquarters building should be complete in a month. The 80,000 sq ft of office space took two years to build and is the biggest building completed by Innotech in Barbados.

  Opposition MPs have been quick to pour scorn on Prime Minister Freundel Stuart’s plans to make Barbados a Republic calling it a distraction from the main problems facing the economy. Polls have also rejected the move as being inappropriate at this point in time and many people are surprised at the timing considering the serious state of healthcare, agriculture, education and the Sugar Industry.

Jerry Franklyn the Managing Director of EnSmart Inc. has plenty of confidence in the island’s potential in the renewable energy sector. He was recently quoted in the Barbados Business Authority as saying-”I believe Barbados can be an example for the rest of the Caribbean and even the world if we embrace the energy revolution and implement technologies like the smart grid, energy management systems and renewable energy generation.”

The recently issued Chairman’s Report from Consolidated Finance showed an operating profit before tax of $5.7 million compared to $2.1 million in 2013. Partial recovery of previously written down investment and improved performance with impaired loans had a significant impact on the 2014 result. Consolidated also reported success in their new product range and in particular the financing of renewable energy photovoltaic systems and electric cars.
